The Grey is a movie about a some guys walking around in the cold trying to survive the conditions after a plane crash and to make matters worse, a pack of wolves are chasing and eating them.

This isn’t the first time this formula of movie was made, and it won’t be the last. Here are just a few there have similar story elements. Most of them are more realistic, since wolves don’t generally attack people (click here to read my review and complaints about how infrequent a wolf attack is).

thedgeThe Edge (1997)

The Edge is about a few guys stuck in the wilderness after a plane crash, and a bear chases them and eats one of them. (Michael from Lost gets eaten, bummer). This movie is much more realistic because grizzleys are known to attack people, and eat them, and it happens more often than we would like to think. Of course, these are usually wild bears, and in this movie, they used a trained bear to look menacing. But even trained bears have been known to attack their handlers. So, just be careful, I guess.

This movie is pretty good, Anthony Hopkins, and Alec Baldwin make a good pair on screen and there’s a fun twist at the end.

Pitch Black (2000)

pitchblackPitch Black has pretty much the same plot as The Grey. But instead of a plane crash, its a space ship crash, and instead of wolves, it’s creepy aliens that come out at night to eat you. So, way more realistic.  :)

I like this one, but I like the sequel better, Chronicles of Riddick.

Alive (1993)

aliveAlive is another plane crash survival movie. But in this one, they eat their dead friends. The characters in The Grey actually joke about that movie. I never actually saw that one, but to my knowledge, they aren’t attacked by any predators. It’s also based on a true story

A Cry of the Wild (1990)

acryofthewild

Based on the classic book, Hatchet, it features a boy who is flying to see his father. But the pilot has a heart attack and dies, and crashes the plain in a little lake in Canada. With no hope of being found, the boy must use only his wits and his hatchet to survive.

This is fantastic movie, if you can find it on Netflix, I you should see it sometime.

The Way Back (2010)

thewayback

Based on a true story, a group of men escape from a Russian gulag and travel 4,000 miles across Siberia, dessert, and the Himalayas.
